The Hurt Locker

04/12/12

After an evening of cocktail making we decided it was best not to sleep before our 8am bus to Cambodia and instead spent the night playing cards, indoor hostel beach volleyball (courtesy of Dave T) and watching BBC news...needless to say this was a mistake! Our bus was not in fact a bus...it was THE HURT LOCKER! 6 hours of pounding over bumps on a parcel shelf made of metal, with no real suspension and a driver that stopped every hour to let us get a taste of not being punched in the head, only to order us back on the bus to receive more punishments for paying him...we have not made the same mistake again and on the way to Phnom Penh we're getting a night bus complete with beds...
The border crossing into Cambodia took quite a while and we ended up getting a 2 hour taxi from the border crossing for an extra 300baht which is roughly £6 - not bad! However, our guides were not 100% truthful...turns out we're staying at a different 'Golden Banana' hostel than originally promised (our pool looks more like a pond than a place to go for a swim) and they provided some excellent misinformation about currency etc. No harm done though as we weren't ripped off and we've stayed an extra 2 nights in the fake 'Golden Banana' right in the middle of town! We're now wise to the game and it turns out reading the guide book is actually worthwhile! We were in bed by 11 with a hot water bottle and a horlicks, ish...

After a solid 12 hours sleep it was time for some exploring and a visit by tuk tuk ($3.50 for 3 hours service) to the floating village. We had a boat for 3 with a guide and it was nice to see some of the 'real' Cambodia. We also gave a semi compulsory gift of a bag of rice cooking ingredients to a school of orphans from the village...we know, too generous, and then it was time for dinner and a massage (again no happy endings but 3 relaxed men) before a couple of beers.

An early start for an epic 40km bike ride to the temples at Angkor Wat, not normally a troubling distance but our 2 free bikes and 1 that cost $1 were unsurprisingly a bit of a handful! The temples were pretty amazing (see photos attached) especially the last we visited - Angkor Wat! We got back around 6 and retired for a little siesta until dinner before booking our luxury bus to Phnom Penh tomorrow night :-)
Hope you like the snaps...

You are looking tanned already. Hope you come back with a good selection of cocktail recipies as you seem to be sampling quite a few!!! Look forward to the next installment xx

  2. Unfortunately, I saw sicario putlocker Zero Dark Thirty before this movie, so I made the obvious comparison and found Hurt Locker to be a little bit lacking. It had a good story with good characters, but something about it lacked the *zing* that makes me want to watch a movie over and over again; there was no one moment that drew me in and wouldn't let go. Perhaps I've seen Jeremy Renner playing Jeremey Renner one too many times? Maybe I need to give this flick a second chance? The thing is... I don't have a strong desire to do so.

In yidio terms of Iraq/desert war movies spanning the past 20+ years, I'd opt for The Kingdom, Jarhead, Zero Dark Thirty... and if you want to go broader, Black Hawk Down. It's a good movie, but I was hoping for a little bit more.
